Colwyn Bay is the quieter middle of this coast, a broad sweep of sand between Rhos-on-Sea and Old Colwyn with a long promenade running the whole way round. It is greener and more residential than the resorts either side of it, laid out in wide avenues and generous plots climbing the hill behind the front.

Walk the promenade end to end. It is one of the best stretches of the Wales Coast Path here, flat, paved and open the whole way. Behind the front the land climbs steeply, and its wide avenues are as much a part of the town as the sand.
The Conwy valley starts a few miles west and runs south into the mountains, with Bodnant Garden about twenty minutes away. Llandudno is ten minutes along the coast, and Conwy about the same. The station is on the main line, with roughly hourly trains each way.
There was almost nothing here in 1865, when the Manchester businessman John Pender bought the Pwllycrochan estate and seven hundred acres for twenty-six thousand pounds. Pender had made a fortune in undersea telegraph cables and meant the empty bay to become a resort. He sold it on in 1875 with covenants on what could be built, and so the town grew up a garden suburb by the sea.
Above the town the Welsh Mountain Zoo opens every day but Christmas, a hillside site with the sea below it and the mountains behind. At the western end, Rhos-on-Sea keeps a little harbour and St Trillo’s chapel, said to be the smallest church in Britain, standing right on the beach.
Down on the front, the Porth Eirias centre runs watersports off the sand, with a bistro above it from the chef Bryn Williams looking straight out to sea. It sits mid-bay, an easy flat walk from Rhos-on-Sea or Old Colwyn.
The sea is clean here: Colwyn Bay and Porth Eirias were both rated Excellent for bathing in 2025. The town’s weekly market came back in March 2026 after a long gap.
Colwyn Bay accommodation is mostly self-catering, with guest houses along the seafront and cottages up the wooded slopes above the town. Places to stay open at £75 a night. It is a quieter stretch than the promenade at Llandudno, and you give up nothing in reach of Conwy or the mountains.
