Abergele is a market town about a mile back from the sea. Pensarn, the seaside part of Abergele, has a bank of shingle along the top of the beach, and the sand comes a long way out at low tide. A promenade runs the length of the front. Caravan hire in Abergele suits a family week at the seaside, with Pensarn’s promenade for evening walks.

Start on the promenade, which runs the length of the front with an outdoor gym and a climbing wall beside it, crazy golf, a play area and the usual kiosks. The Wales Coast Path goes through, flat in both directions, and the sea wall path runs on to Kinmel Bay, so it suits bikes and pushchairs.
A bank of shingle runs along it, and part of the shore was made a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1977. Sea holly and sea kale grow on it, and both need loose stones and salt to do well.
The railway reached this stretch of coast in 1848 and the station opened as plain Abergele. Pensarn was added to the name about thirty-five years later, when the station was rebuilt, by which time the two places had grown into one another. The line still runs along the top of the shingle.
Gwrych Castle, a Victorian castle-style house being rebuilt after years in ruins, stands on the hill behind Abergele, a few minutes away by car. Towyn and Rhyl are along the coast to the east, Colwyn Bay and Llandudno to the west, and the A55 runs behind the town for anything further afield.
For a wet day, the Welsh Mountain Zoo at Colwyn Bay is about fifteen minutes west, and Towyn has a big open-air market, busiest on a Sunday.
Pensarn puts you on the flat part of this coast, with the promenade in front and the A55 behind. Rhyl is eight miles east, Colwyn Bay and its zoo about fifteen minutes west, and Gwrych Castle is on the hill above the town.
