Between and around them the ground is farmland and wooded valley. The Clywedog runs west out of Wrexham, and the Dee comes down from the Berwyns through Llangollen on its way to Chester.

On the southern edge of Wrexham stands Erddig, a country house with gardens running down towards the valley. It is one of the National Trust's best known places, and it is known for a distinctly odd reason.

Most country houses recorded the family. At Erddig the Yorkes recorded the staff. From 1791 they commissioned painted portraits of their own servants and hung them where the servants could see them, in the hall and the corridor below stairs.

They did not stop at paintings. When photography arrived they photographed the staff instead, and either way they wrote verses to go underneath, naming the person, saying what they did and how long they had done it.

The habit ran for the best part of two hundred years. Nothing else quite like it survives anywhere in Britain, and the result is the most complete continuous record of domestic service in any country house in the land.

The verses are not grand. They are affectionate, sometimes clumsy and occasionally very funny, and you can still read them on the wall. They cover carpenters, gamekeepers, housemaids, a woodman and a blacksmith who started on the place as a boy.

The house and its gardens are open, and the servants' portraits still hang where they always hung, downstairs rather than in the drawing room. It is worth going round the below-stairs part first and the family rooms afterwards, because it changes what you make of both.

The habit has not quite died. In 2024 a portrait of Glyn Smith, the head gardener, went up for a couple of months when he retired. He had put in thirty-eight years, and a verse was written for him in the style of the old ones. He was the first addition since 1920.

From Erddig the gardens run down into the Clywedog valley and a flat path follows the river west for miles. It is the easiest good walk near Wrexham and you can start it within sight of the house, which is not true of many valley walks.

Wrexham itself sits ten minutes back up the road, with St Giles' church and its 136-foot tower standing in the middle of it. Llangollen and the Dee valley lie twenty minutes south-west, and you can be on the Clwydian hills in about the same going north-west.
