Old Hand and Diamond Inn at Coedway

Old Hand and Diamond Inn at Coedway has a 3 star rating
Coedway, Shrewsbury SY5 9AR

Sitting quite literally in Mid Wales on the border between Wales and England, The Old Hand and Diamond Inn is a traditional coaching inn with a history that dates back to the 17th century. Today, The Old Hand and Diamond is a welcoming pub, with a 100-seat restaurant and 7 guest bedrooms. Its ideally situated for exploring the border region, with its many attractions on both sides.

The seven guest bedrooms offer a good range of accommodation options, from double rooms right up to family rooms that can sleep up to five guests. The rooms have a wealth of period features, including oak beams, and they have been tastefully decorated in a warm and comfortable style. The guest rooms are all located on the first and second floors and all have central heating and double glazing. Flatscreen TVs and tea and coffee making facilities are provided, and a guest cot can be supplied on request. All rooms have en-suite facilities.

When this coaching inn was first built, back in the 17th century, it was well-placed to offer hospitality to travellers journeying between Wales and England, and that remains true to this day, as there are so many things to see and do on either side of the border. From hiking trails in the glorious countryside to exploring the nearby towns and visiting stately homes, there are attractions to suit the whole family.

Easily the most famous walking trail in this area is the Offas Dyke Footpath, which roughly follows the Welsh-English border, from Chepstow right up to Prestatyn. Whether you take in a short stretch of the footpath, or you aim to complete all 177 miles of it over a longer stay in Wales, The Old Hand and Diamond Inn would make an excellent base. There are many other walking trails in this part of the country too, including the Severn Way National Trail, which runs from Newtown to Welshpool, and the Stiperstones, over the border in Shropshire.

All within a short distance from Coedway, where The Old Hand and Diamond is located, are the lovely little towns of Welshpool, Newtown and Montgomery. Enjoy a day spent browsing the independent shops and boutiques, or visit Newtown Textile Museum, for a look back in time to when this area was an important hand-loom weaving centre. Further afield, Snowdonia is within easy driving distance, for a day out exploring the many stunning locations in this amazing National Park, and the seaside towns of Aberystwyth, Aberdyfi and Barmouth are all within a reasonable distance.

Guests dont have to travel to enjoy a hearty meal at the end of a day spent hiking or sightseeing, as the 100-seat restaurant is open 7 days a week, offering traditional pub dishes, along with plenty of tempting specials. Much of the produce used in the restaurant is sourced from local farms, and in season, game from the local estate makes a regular appearance on the menu.

Whatever type of holiday you are looking for, the Welsh borders area has plenty to offer, and The Old Hand and Diamond Inn makes a welcoming and comfortable base for your stay.
