Pwllheli sits halfway along the Llŷn, at the widest part of the peninsula. The sand runs a mile east from the harbour mouth, there is a four-hundred-berth marina at Hafan Pwllheli, and the Cambrian Coast railway comes to a stop here.

Llanbedrog is three miles west along the shore and worth the trip on its own. A row of painted beach huts stands on the sand. The National Trust looks after the headland above, and a path climbs it to a metal figure called the Tin Man.
Nowhere on the peninsula is much more than half an hour away. Abersoch and the boats are seven miles south-west, Criccieth and its castle are nine miles east, and Aberdaron at the tip is under forty minutes.
Three miles west of Pwllheli, above the beach at Llanbedrog, stands a Gothic mansion called Plas Glyn-y-Weddw. The name means the widow’s glen, and the house was raised in 1857 for a widow of the Madryn estate to hold her collection of paintings.
It stayed a private house until 1896, when it was bought and opened to the public. That makes it the oldest art gallery in Wales, and it has been showing pictures on and off ever since.
Above it, on the heath, a figure looks out over the bay. The present one is metal and known as the Tin Man. It was flown up by helicopter in 2002. It is the third to stand there: the first was destroyed by vandals and the second rusted away.
The gallery still hangs exhibitions through the year and has a café and a shop. Entry to the house is free, and the pictures change often enough to be worth a second visit in the same week.
The grounds still run up the hillside behind into woodland, with paths through the trees and a sculpture trail among them. It is the one place on this coast where a wet afternoon is no trouble at all.
Llanbedrog beach lies below, and everybody photographs the row of painted huts along the sand. The National Trust looks after the headland above, and you can walk it without paying.
The climb to the Tin Man takes about twenty minutes from the beach and it is steep in one place. From beside it you can see most of the south coast of the peninsula, and on a clear day the mountains behind Harlech.
Pwllheli itself is three miles back along the shore, and you can walk it on the coast path. That end has the shops, the marina and the trains; this end has the beach and the trees.
