What is Lampeter known for?

Its college. St David's took its royal charter in 1828, which made it the third oldest degree-awarding body in Wales and England, behind only Oxford and Cambridge. It is also known for its second-hand bookshops, its livestock market, and the farms that ring the town.

Where is Lampeter, and what county is it in?

Ceredigion, in west Wales. The A482, A475 and A485 all meet here, in the valley of the river Teifi. The county was called Cardiganshire until 1974 and plenty of people still use the old name. Lampeter itself has fewer than three thousand people.

How far is Lampeter from Aberystwyth and the coast?

Aberystwyth lies twenty-five miles north up the A485. The nearest sea is at Aberaeron, thirteen miles west. Carmarthen is twenty-three miles south, with the M4 beyond it. Lampeter has no railway station, so trains mean Carmarthen or Aberystwyth.

What is there to do in Lampeter?

Time a visit around the market. It runs on the second and fourth Saturday of the month, in the Canterbury Building car park on the college campus, and parking there is free. Stalls sell vegetables, cheese, cakes and soap, and someone is usually playing music. The rest of the week it is the bookshops, the quadrangle and the walks along the Teifi.

What's nearby?

Aberaeron and the sea are thirteen miles west. The National Wool Museum at Dre-fach Felindre, in the old Cambrian Mills, is free to go into and open most of the year. East of the town the roads climb quickly towards the Cambrian Mountains.

Is it a good rural base?

Yes. The coast is twenty minutes west. Aberystwyth and Cardigan are both under an hour by car, and the hills start the moment you leave town eastwards. It is a country town first and a holiday base second, so the shops and the market keep going all year.
