Llandeilo stands where the Tywi valley widens, with eight hundred acres of parkland at Dinefwr beginning at the edge of the town. One of the oldest fallow deer herds in Britain grazes in it, and the ruins of Dinefwr Castle look down from a bluff above the river. A hotel in Llandeilo puts Carreg Cennen Castle and the wider Tywi valley within a short drive.

A gospel book written about the year 730 spent part of its life on the altar of the church here. Somebody added notes in its margins in the ninth century, in Latin and in Welsh, and eight of them survive among the earliest written Welsh anywhere. The book left Llandeilo in the tenth century and is at Lichfield Cathedral now, as the St Chad Gospels.
The church it sat in is St Teilo’s, and the town is named after him. It is still the parish church, at the top of the town, with an enormous graveyard that drops away to the river on one side and the market on the other.
Dinefwr is the walk everyone does. A circuit of the deer park takes about an hour, with Newton House in the middle and the castle ruins above, and the National Trust opens the grounds all year.
Dolaucothi Gold Mines, near Pumsaint to the north-west, are the only known Roman gold mine in Britain. There are three ways in: a Victorian mine tour, a Levels mine tour and a Roman mine trail. The National Trust runs underground tours that last about an hour and a quarter and must be booked ahead, and the mine yard is open from ten until five.
Llandeilo has five castles within half an hour’s drive, Dinefwr and Carreg Cennen among them. Aberglasney is a garden four miles down the valley and the National Botanic Garden of Wales is about ten. The Cothi valley and Brechfa Forest, north of the town, are good for walks and cycle rides.
Carreg Cennen, the castle on its limestone crag, is eight miles to the east. Cadw, the Welsh government’s heritage body, runs it. It opens from half past nine until half past five between April and October, and until half past four in winter, with the last entry an hour before closing. An adult ticket is £7.35, and a circular walk starts from the castle and loops through ancient oak woodland.
Llandeilo works as a base for the whole of the Tywi valley. Llandovery is twenty minutes upriver, Carmarthen twenty-five minutes west, and the western end of the Brecon Beacons about the same again to the east.
