Llandeilo Accommodation

Where to Stay in Llandeilo

Llandeilo is a hilltop town of painted houses above the River Tywi, with narrow streets full of small shops and the valley opening out wide behind it. Rhosmaen Street runs the length of the ridge. From the top of the town the whole Tywi valley is in front of you. Accommodation in Llandeilo puts you above the river, with Dinefwr Park at the edge of town.

More About Llandeilo

The bridge below the town took five years to build and cost the county something over twenty thousand pounds. William Williams, the Carmarthenshire bridge surveyor, drew it as a single arch of a hundred and forty-five feet across the Tywi. Work began in 1843.

Morgan Morgan and Thomas Jenkins started it and Edward Haycock finished the job in 1848. The antiquary George Eyre Evans called it the finest single-arch stone bridge in Wales, and when it opened it was the third longest single arch in Britain.

You can stand on it and watch the river go under. The town climbs away from the bridge in narrow streets, and the row of painted houses on the far bank is the view most people stop to photograph. From accommodation in Llandeilo the bridge is a short walk down the hill.

Llandeilo lives on small shops. Heavenly, on Rhosmaen Street, sells hand-made chocolates and its own Italian-style ice cream. The open-air market fills the square every Friday, nine in the morning until half past four. The town’s visitor site, Visit Llandeilo, lists what is on.

Dinefwr, the National Trust parkland, begins a few minutes on foot from the square, and Llandeilo accommodation in the centre is within walking distance of it. The Festival of Senses fills the streets over a weekend each November, and the livestock sale at Ffairfach runs just across the bridge.

Llandeilo accommodation — your questions answered

Where is Llandeilo?
In Carmarthenshire, in south-west Wales, on a hill above the River Tywi.
What county is Llandeilo in?
Carmarthenshire. The town sits in the Tywi valley, roughly in the middle of the county, with Llandovery upriver to the north-east and Carmarthen downriver to the west.
How do you pronounce Llandeilo?
Roughly hlan-DAY-lo, with the stress on the middle part. The Welsh double L at the start is made by putting your tongue where you would for an L and blowing air out the sides.
What is there to do in Llandeilo?
From Llandeilo accommodation, walk the parkland at Dinefwr, which the National Trust looks after, and cross the bridge for the Tywi Valley Path. In the town itself it is the independent shops, the cafés and the Friday market.
Where can you eat in Llandeilo?
There is a good run of places for a town this size, with cafés around the square and inns along Rhosmaen Street that serve food through the day.
How much does it cost to stay in Llandeilo?
Prices for Llandeilo accommodation on this page start at £72 a night. Each card carries that place’s own price, and a green badge marks the ones that take a booking directly.

Llandeilo is small enough to cross on foot, and Llandeilo accommodation is well placed for the rest of the county. Carmarthen is fifteen miles west, the Brecon Beacons begin to the east, and the Tywi valley runs in both directions from the bridge.
