Coed-y-Brenin forest park, which can rightly boast some of the best mountain bike tracks in Britain, is only 7 miles north on the A470, and there are many other cycle routes including a traffic-free ride from Dolgellau to the nearby resort of Barmouth. There are many other activities in the surrounding area including pony-trekking, and the Tryweryn white- water centre only 20 miles away with its world class white water.
Activities There's lots to do and see around Dolgellau, including plenty of hillwalking or flat-walking opportunities.Cadair Idris is the most well known of the surrounding mountains - and justly so - but look a little further and you find the dramatic Rhinogs bordering the coast, and further inland are the Arans, (a well kept secret!) with Aran Fawddwy even higher than Cader. All are within a few miles of Dolgellau, offering great day's hiking. Some hiking can be quite tough so there are also several walks nearer and a touch less challenging - Dolgellau's home-grown walks - the Torrent and the Precipice Walks. If this is not enough, the stunningly attractive Mawddach Estuary winds among the mountains of Southern Snowdonia, and there are several estuary walks- and pubs - to keep walkers happy. For those wanting to find some hidden sites by car there is always the pretty drive to the isolated Cregennen Lakes or a visit to the ruins of Bere castle. Mountain Biking A few miles along the A470, and you can get some of the best mountain biking there is at Coed-y-Brenin (the King's Forest). With seven routes suiting different levels, c-y-b truly is the king of the MTB trails whether for a family fun day out - or all the way through to the Beast - not to be taken lightly! White Water Rafting Why not ride the rapids? white water rafting is all year round at Tryweryn, about 20 miles from Dolgellau. The fast flowing rapids will carry you down the course on an exhilarating and adrenalin fuelled trip! And, because the Tryweryn is a dam controlled river we very often have water when all the other rivers are dry! Don't worry if you don't fancy the adventure of the river, there are extensive riverside trails around the Centre, and picnic areas dotted around the site which give you the opportunity to take in the splendour of the
