Newtown Textile Museum
This Mid Wales Tourist Attraction the Newtown Textile Museum is located at 5 - 7 Commercial Street in the town. The building is a very good example of a typical early 19th century weaving shop.
The Museum consists of two floors of three back-to-back cottages and two large rooms on the second and third floors running the full length of the Museum. The three cottages (originally six) would have housed a family each. Most family members would have worked in the weaving shop on the two floors above either as handloom weavers or other weaving work.
The Newtown Textile Museum was the idea of the late Major Peter Lewis who in 1962 formed a committee to purchase and preserve the building and to create a record of the history of the woollen industry in Newtown. Volunteers worked hard to create the textile museum which was first opened to the public in 1967. In 1990 the textile museum charity was transferred to Powys County Council.
During 1995-1996 the museum was renovated and restored, resulting in a museum meeting the standards of a modern museum building in terms of environment, care of collections and interpretation..
