The first road bridge to cross the Menai Strait to the Isle of Anglesey, the Menai Suspension Bridge was built by Thomas Telford in 1826; this bridge now stands as testament to Telford's superb engineering foresight, as modern vehicles now travel across in ever-increasing numbers, many bringing tourists to enjoy holidays in one of the many cottages or to stay in a delightful b & b. It is thought that the Romans first settled here, as it is the shortest crossing from the mainland. Today Menai Bridge (Porthaethwy in Welsh) would make a great holiday or short break destination and base from which to explore the Isle of Anglesey, the North Wales coast and spectacular Snowdonia. Well, located hotels are found on the banks of the Menai Strait, with superb opportunities for coastal adventure and sailing. Menai Bridge itself offers first class tourist and holiday facilities, the town has a selection of small independent shops, antique shops, chocolatier, and a Waitrose supermarket, with a few local pubs and Inns, selling fine ales, wines and spirits as well as a good choice of restaurants, the facilities here, together with its location make it an ideal destination for those who prefer to rent self-catering holiday homes or book into Hotels. Wales Tourists Online are pleased to offer such quality accommodation and wonderful array of places to stay on the banks of the straits, You can walk along the waterfront under the shadow of the suspension Bridge along the Belgian promenade that was built during the First World War by Belgian and Flemish refugees, to Church Island home to St Tysilio’s Church, a pretty little church built of stone with a wonderful Oak door accessed by a short causeway. The present Church was built sometime during the fourteen hundred's although the site itself housed a church in the 7th Century founded by St Tysilio. If you visit Church Island today you will be greeted by a magnificent Yew tree as you walk through the gates, the path leads you around the small island past the graves of local families, seafarers and a monument dedicated to the servicemen who lost their lives in the Great War of 1914-18 and the second World War 1939-45. Book short break holiday accommodation in Menai Bridge it makes an ideal base from which to explore the rest of Anglesey’s coastal towns, fishing villages and harbours. The island is full of history and activities to keep the most active entertained. Check out any bargain breaks for great value accommodation.
